What Is an Air Cooler?

An air cooler is any device designed to lower the temperature of the air inside a building, room, cold storage room or vehicle. Air coolers work by passing warm air over a cold heat exchange surface — either refrigerant-filled coils, chilled water coils or a wetted evaporative media — extracting heat from the air and delivering cooled air back into the space. They are used across a vast range of applications from food storage and process industry to commercial buildings and transport.

Air coolers used in thermally insulated enclosures form the basis of refrigerators, blast freezers and cold rooms. In buildings, air coolers are required wherever the building itself is unable to dissipate enough heat through passive means — such as natural ventilation, thermal mass or earth sheltering — and active mechanical cooling is needed to maintain occupant comfort or process temperature requirements.

How Air Coolers Work

There are three main mechanisms used in air coolers, and United Heat Exchangers manufactures equipment based on all three principles:

  • Refrigerant Coil (DX) Air Coolers — warm air is blown over finned evaporator coils containing a refrigerant such as R22, R404A or R410A. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air as it evaporates, cooling the air before returning it to the space. Used in cold rooms, blast freezers and refrigerated warehouses.
  • Chilled Water Air Coolers — chilled water from a central plant is circulated through finned tube coils. Air blown over the coils gives up heat to the water, which returns to the chiller. Used in large commercial buildings, process facilities and cleanrooms requiring precise humidity and temperature control.
  • Evaporative Air Coolers — warm dry air is passed through a wetted evaporative media pad. Water evaporates from the pad surface, absorbing latent heat from the air and reducing its temperature. Effective in hot, dry climates; no refrigerant required. Used in factories, warehouses, workshops and large industrial halls.

Refrigerant (DX) Evaporator Coil Air Cooler

Fin and tube evaporator coils for direct-expansion refrigeration systems. Warm air is blown over finned evaporator coils by axial fans; the refrigerant inside the coils evaporates and absorbs heat from the airstream. Available for medium-temperature (+2°C to +10°C) and low-temperature (-25°C to 0°C) cold room applications. Defrost by electric heater, hot gas or water sprinkler. Suitable for refrigerant types R404A, R448A, NH₃ and others.

Chilled Water Fan Coil Air Cooler

Chilled water circulates through finned tube coils while fans draw warm room air over the coil surface. The water absorbs heat from the air and returns to the central chiller plant. Used in commercial buildings, process areas, server rooms and cleanrooms. Allows centralised plant and precise individual zone temperature control. Available as ceiling cassette, ducted, floor-mounted or wall-mounted units.

Evaporative Air Cooler

Hot dry outdoor air is drawn through water-saturated evaporative media pads. Water evaporation from the pad surface removes latent heat from the air, dropping its temperature by 8–12°C. No compressor, no refrigerant — highly energy efficient for open industrial spaces in hot, dry climates. Ideal for factories, workshops, warehouses, sports halls and outdoor venues in Tamil Nadu and other arid regions.
