Air Cooled Heat Exchanger Manufacturers in India

United Heat Exchangers designs and manufactures high-performance air cooled heat exchangers โ€” also called air fin coolers or fin fan coolers โ€” for rejecting heat from hot process fluids to the atmosphere using only ambient air as the cooling medium. No water required.

Air Cooled Heat Exchangers (Fin Fan Coolers / Air Fin Coolers) โ€” What They Are

Air Cooled Heat Exchangers, Fin Fan Coolers, Air Fin Coolers, Coil Coolers, and Dry Cooling Towers all refer to the same category of air cooling equipment. These names are used interchangeably across different industries and regions of the world โ€” all describe a finned tube heat exchanger that uses atmospheric air, driven by axial flow fans, to cool a hot process fluid without consuming water.

An air cooled heat exchanger transfers heat from a hot process fluid flowing inside finned tubes to atmospheric cooling air flowing across the outside of the fin surface. The extended fin surface dramatically increases the effective heat transfer area per unit of tube length, enabling efficient heat rejection to the ambient air even at modest temperature differences. The result is an economical, low-running-cost cooling solution that eliminates the need for a cooling water supply, water treatment chemicals, or a separate cooling tower circuit.

In principle, air cooled heat exchangers are the industrial equivalent of automotive radiators โ€” but engineered for high-pressure, high-temperature process duty in oil refineries, gas plants, petrochemical facilities and power stations.

Design & Construction

Air fin coolers are designed with multiple rows of finned tubes arranged in a series of surfaces โ€” the tube bundle. The required number of axial flow fans are positioned to move low-temperature ambient air over the finned tube surface, cooling the hotter process fluid inside the tubes. The finned tube bundle modules are of modular construction for straightforward transportation and site assembly.

Header Types

The header โ€” which distributes and collects process fluid at each end of the tube bundle โ€” is available in several configurations to suit process pressure, temperature and maintenance requirements:

  • Welded Bonnet Header
  • Plug Header
  • Manifold Header
  • Plug and Pipe Header

Fin Types

The choice of fin type affects heat transfer efficiency, material suitability and cost. United Heat Exchangers manufactures air cooled heat exchangers with all standard fin configurations:

  • 'L' Type Wrap-On Fins
  • 'G' Type Embedded Fins
  • Bi-metallic Extruded Fins
  • Wire / Strip Type Copper Wound / Knurled Fins

Types of Air Cooled Heat Exchangers We Manufacture

We design and supply air cooled heat exchangers in multiple configurations โ€” fan arrangement, airflow direction and construction โ€” to suit every process industry requirement.

Forced Draft

Axial flow fans are positioned below the tube bundle and push ambient air upward through the fin surface. The standard configuration for most process cooler applications. Offers uniform airflow distribution, easy fan maintenance access, and lower power consumption. Air enters cool at the fan and exits hot at the top, reducing the effect of hot air recirculation.

Induced Draft

Fans are mounted above the tube bundle and draw air upward through the fin surface. Because the fans handle warm exit air, they operate at lower efficiency than forced draft units, but the configuration provides better protection of the process fluid from ambient temperature spikes and offers more uniform air distribution across the bundle face.

Air Blast Oil Cooler

A compact, self-contained air cooled heat exchanger specifically designed for cooling lubricating oil, hydraulic oil and transformer oil in applications where cooling water is unavailable. Available in flat fin & tube and finned coil construction. Mounted directly on machinery or as a standalone unit. Suitable for gensets, compressors, hydraulic power packs and industrial machinery.

Construction Details

Fin Technologies for Maximum Heat Transfer

The fin type determines heat transfer efficiency, material compatibility, and suitability for different process temperatures and environments.

'L' Type Wrap-On Fins

Aluminium strip is formed into an 'L' shape and wound tightly onto the tube under tension. The foot of the 'L' lies flat on the tube, providing a large contact area and good heat transfer. Cost-effective and widely used for moderate temperature duties up to approximately 180ยฐC. Suitable for carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium tubes.

'G' Type Embedded Fins

A groove is machined into the tube surface and an aluminium fin strip is wound into and over the groove, then crimped to lock it in place. This intimate mechanical contact minimises fin-to-tube thermal resistance and maintains performance even at high operating temperatures. Preferred for high-temperature process duty and situations where thermal cycling could cause 'L' fin lifting.

Bi-Metallic Extruded Fins

An aluminium outer tube is extruded over a steel inner tube, and fins are formed by machining the aluminium outer layer. The bi-metallic construction combines the excellent thermal conductivity and light weight of aluminium fins with the strength and pressure-holding capability of the steel inner tube. Zero fin-to-tube contact resistance โ€” used in demanding applications where reliability over decades is critical.
